Rebooting the Greek Language Project
Earlier this year, the SFU Stavros Niarchos Centre for Hellenic Studies received a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to develop a new Greek language curriculum, aimed specifically at learners in the Diaspora.
The Hellenic Community of Vancouver, in partnership with Hellenic Studies, has long recognized the importance of supporting young learners in the community, through schools, churches, and parent participation. The project, “Rebooting the Greek Language,” will help make progress on this front.
Work on this project officially started in February of this year as two teams of experts were assembled, one on Greek language teaching and one on technology. A small pilot at the Greek Orthodox Community of East Vancouver helped them get started on the basics as they worked through new approaches and ideas for teaching and learning Greek.
This month, Hellenic Studies will be rolling out another pilot, available on iPad, which will form the cornerstone of a solid curriculum in schools, while also providing learning support at home.
More information will be made available in the coming weeks, along with an invitation to parents to formally participate in an efficacy and usability study with an eye to a full rollout by fall of 2019.
More detailed information about the pedagogy and implementation can be found here: http://rebootinggreek.com/overview
The Hellenic Community of Vancouver is proud to partner-up with SFU Hellenic Studies in support of their amazing work. We look forward to helping enrich our diaspora through spreading our great language!
