41st Annual Gold Plate Dinner
The Gold Plate Dinner is an annual fundraiser that is hosted by the Hellenic Community of Vancouver. Now in its 41st year, The Gold Plate Dinner was first held in 1977 and was originally organized by local well-connected Vancouver Greeks (founding members listed in alphabetical order): George Chronopoulos, Bill Gardiner, Peter Palivos, Greg Pappas, Terry Sklavenitis, George Vastardis, Art Virvilis and Tony Parsons (Honorary Member as original Celebrity MC). At the time of inception, the Hellenic Community of Vancouver was battling hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, high interest rates and was struggling to provide the community programs and service the mortgage on the Centre. The Gold Plate Dinner was launched in an effort to pay off the mortgage and ensure the Community Centre remained as a symbol of the Greek community, ensuring the ongoing longevity of the Greek culture.
With the original Gold Plate Dinner committee consisting of many restaurateurs, the Hellenic Gold Plate event became renowned for its food and drinks and the incredible value it was offering to ticket holders. The annual dinner / lottery has been successfully growing each year, becoming the single largest fundraiser for the Hellenic Community of Vancouver. The annual event raises $70,000 to fund programs such as Greek Language Schools, Greek Cultural Dance Classes, Youth and Goodwill programs – attended by the local Greek community, professionals, media, local businesses, friends and family alike.
